The first evidence of handball goes back to long before, however. The women of the Roman Empire played a game similar to handball, which they called expulsim ludere. There were other handball-like games played in Medieval France. The first games of Olympic handball were played in 1936 in Berlin.

Modern handball was first played towards the end of the 19th century. The real impulses emanated from Denmark, Germany and Sweden. The founding fathers of field handball were probably German physical education experts who gained recognition for field handball as a separate sport at the turn of the century, based on the games of “Raffball” (‘snatch ball’) and “Königsbergerball” (Konrad Koch 1846-1911).
Handball, as an indoor sport was first presented in the Munich 1972 Olympic Games. A competition involving 16 men’s teams was staged with Yugoslavia winning the first Olympic gold medal. (2nd Czechoslovakia, 3rd Romania). Women’s handball was introduced at the following Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada in 1976.

According to Nogueira (2004), there are reports that Handball appeared in Denmark in 1848, through a game created by Prof. Holger Nielsen, whose name was Handebold or Haadbold.
